Parkour for Thorildskolan - a case study

Thorildskolan is centrally located in Kungälv in Sweden just 21 kilometres north of Gothenburg. The school has about 450 pupils from years 7-9.

The school was originally built in the 1950s but continuously updated with a complete renovation from 2015-2017. The style is functionalist with straight lines and beautiful buildings with copper roofs.

The stunning architecture is eye-catching ...

With respect for architecture, we had to find a solution that appealed to the youngsters. Here the focus was on sports and activity, and the young people should have elbow room with the opportunity to 'burn off energy'. The school chose the installation of two different parkour systems dyed in light blue. The colour choice plays along with fall pads and hang-out furniture that is also painted light blue. The school also chose to have three round trampolines that were set up in continuation of each other. Finally, a cluster of seven ‘hopops’ (bollard seating) was provided as a space for people to sit together.

Here we are social and thinking of the environment

When the students start in year 7 in Thorildskolan, the new classes are set according to the belief that an equal gender distribution, geographical spread and a balanced academic level provide the best learning environment.
The school also aims to work actively on environmental issues and to be as sustainable as possible.
