Digterparken’s New Playground – a sensory universe inspired by poetry

The idea behind Digterparken’s new playground was to create an imaginative and playful universe that invites children into the poet’s world. The playground’s design and functions draw inspiration from the poet’s tools – books, pens, pencils, and words – transforming them into experiences that children can feel, balance on, climb, and explore. Just like poets, children perceive the world through their senses and emotions. As they balance on a fountain pen, swing between giant pencils, climb over a book, or feel different tactile surfaces, they develop motor skills, imagination, and an understanding of their own bodies in relation to their surroundings. The playground is designed especially for children aged 0–6 and offers progression in difficulty – also suitable for curious children who are a bit older. Comfortable seating and rest areas for adults are integrated into the design.

An aesthetic design approach using natural materials

The design embraces natural materials and calm colours to ensure harmony with the park’s green surroundings, while still creating a clear visual landmark from the path. The choice of materials and construction focuses on high quality, long-lasting durability, and minimal maintenance. The elevated front edge towards the path ensures an even surface, preventing the safety sand from washing away due to terrain slope. The edge is therefore built as a double layer facing the path and a single layer around the rest of the playground. The terrain is levelled with soil and grass to create a natural, functional, and robust solution for many years to come.

The playground is created in alignment with the development plan “More Play in Viborg Municipality” and supports the ambition to offer inspiring learning and play environments where children can explore in safe and imaginative surroundings.
