Lykkens Have, Esbjerg Citypark

Lykkens Have is a colourful and imaginative playground for young children, where art, play and nature come together in a cohesive experience. The design concept creates a sensory and enchanting world that invites children to explore with curiosity and a sense of adventure. The playground functions as a destination playground for the entire city.

Art as the guiding design principle

Inspired by Asger Jorn’s painting Lykkens Have, his impulsive and playful line forms the guiding principle of the entire playground. The line shapes levels, zones, shortcuts, portals and walkways, creating recognisability and coherence throughout the site. The artwork functions as an active play element and is integrated with nature, supporting children’s sensory and motor development. The colourful mosaic stones, created by artist Lotte Lambæk, add unique, handcrafted details that enhance the playground’s aesthetic quality and provide children with visual and tactile play experiences.

Play, art and nature in interaction

The playground is designed around three key drivers: play, art and nature. The play equipment supports essential play values and motor development for children aged 0–6. The zones are shaped as circular segments, each offering distinct experiences that stimulate movement and the senses through play and learning. The continuous line acts as a connecting element, creating a playful flow that encourages movement both within individual zones and across the entire playground.

Safety, independence and clarity

The play equipment has a transparent expression and a clear identity, providing overview and a sense of safety. Children can easily navigate the playground, move freely across larger distances and plan their next move. This supports independence and self-confidence and makes Lykkens Have an attractive playground for the whole city.
